Measuring What Matters: Transforming Assessment, Recognition and Credentialing of Complex Learning Competencies (September 26, 2024)
Professor Sandra Milligan is the Executive Director of Melbourne Metrics, a social enterprise unit within the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne and has been working on assessing complex competencies for over thirty years. In this session she will speak to the scalable, robust methods and tools that Melbourne Metrics have developed that enable teachers and schools to assess, report on and credential ‘transversal skills’, ‘ 21st Century skills’ or ‘complex competencies’ such as Agency in Learning, Collaboration, Communication and Acting Ethically, which are integral to learners ability to flourish in the interconnected world of the future.
This session will examine how schools are establishing new metrics for learning that capture the full range of our ambitions for students and how these metrics are being used to drive the conversation of broadening tertiary admission pathways beyond reducing students to a single number. Professor Milligan will discuss next generation assessment methods that focus on the development of competence, not just knowledge, or compliance to tested requirements and how these assessments are being used to generate next-generation credentials which provide a valid, trusted profile of a learner, allowing them to showcase what they are truly capable of.
Professor Milligan will share how partnerships with international education organizations like NEASC and NEASC accredited schools can drive our shared agenda of measuring what matters, recognizing what we value as learning communities and supporting learners to thrive at school and beyond.
