Professional Learning | Workshop
Focus on becoming a culturally proficient educator and addressing bias and microaggressions in the classroom and the school in this in-person two-part workshop series facilitated by Dr. Kalise Wornum — educational leader and author in the area of anti-racist education and cultural proficiency. The NEASC Standards for Accreditation challenge schools to provide a safe, positive, respectful, and inclusive culture that demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for students. This workshop is a dynamic step toward achieving that goal!

| Part 1 - "Understanding Cultural Proficiency and Implicit Bias" Attendees will understand the definition and theory of cultural proficiency and learn practical classroom applications for identifying and addressing microaggressions. Participants will be able to raise questions, discuss challenges in real-time, and discuss the next steps for their school. |

| Part 2 - "Identifying and Interrupting Microaggressions in Schools" During this workshop, participants will gain a clear understanding of the definition of implicit bias and racial microaggressions and how they manifest themselves in schools. The workshop will provide insights into how these phenomena can interrupt and harm the learning process. Most importantly, attendees will learn practices to address these issues. Understanding definitions and theories will only be useful if the knowledge gained leads to improved teaching and learning. Therefore, participants will be exposed to proven strategies to counter the negative effects of microaggressions and implicit bias. Lastly, attendees will have an opportunity to raise questions and discuss challenges in real-time. |
Who should attend?
Schools are encouraged to send a team of educators who can work together to bring this information back to their schools, centers, and districts.
We recommend that those interested in Part 2 first attend Part 1 of this workshop series.
